Education: MY GIFT. MY LOVE. MY PASSION
Prior to a career shift into education, Mr. Hollowell served for over 20 years in corporate America under various capacities in management and leadership. His corporate experience includes training and supervisory roles for Xfinity (Comcast), Verizon and Sprint. He has also worked in banking management for Bank of America, Mortgage Originations for Quicken Loans and Inventory Management for Henry Ford Optimeyes (Optician and floor manager). His career shift to education began only months prior to the beginning of the Covid-19, nationwide shutdown. Through his years of corporate experience, each position lent talents towards his “toolbox” of skills that include training (instruction and education), work force management (classroom management) and leadership (discipline, coaching and counseling). Mr. Hollowell is passionate about education and has a strong foundation in these principles.
The African Proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” is personified in all capacity with Mr. Hollowell. He comes from a line of educators that includes Dean Martin of CTAB, Code Road and his mother, Mrs. Beverly D. Carodine, veteran teacher and educator. She currently serves as the 8th Grade English teacher and Drama enthusiast for CTAB Middle School. Her 36-year, on-going career in education with Detroit Public Schools Community District and CTAB has been integral as a daily source of inspiration for Mr. Hollowell. He is a local product of Detroit Public Schools and alumni/graduate of Renaissance High School. The lessons and tutelage from several, former D.P.S. Masterclass Instructors (Nina Scott, Vocal Instructor – Renaissance High, retired; Brazel Dennard Chorale, Willie Gillespie, Jr., Renaissance Band Instructor; retired D.P.S. Department Head of Music Ed., Earlene Hall – Hally Open Middle School; retired D.P.S Mathematics Department head and Harold Shelton Sr, deceased – Mathematics teacher.) served as the architects of Mr. Hollowell’s teaching style and readily use of didactic lessons.
In addition to his love and passion for education, Mr. Hollowell serves as a member of the historical, “Divine 9” institutions of Greek Fraternities and Sororities. A member of Phi Beta Sigma, Inc., he has ties to Gamma Iota, Phi Beta Sigma, Inc. and Pi Rho, Phi Beta Sigma, Inc. Daily, he embodies the motto of his fraternity, “Culture For Service, Service For Humanity.” In his classroom he focuses on humanity, history and the “black experience” across the African diaspora. When balancing time between work and school, Mr. Hollowell loves comic books, fashion, music and pop culture. He avidly uses these hobbies in the classroom, as relationship and rapport builders with students. His affinity for music allowed him to travel domestically and internationally during his years at Renaissance and as an undergrade at Wayne State. Vocal and Instrumental music performance were the vessels that allowed him to visit and study abroad in Accra, Ghana West Africa, Senegal and Lagos. His passion for fashion is also displayed as he is a small business owner and image consultant in the Detroit Fashion Community. He also serves as a stylist and brand awareness consultant for the Motor City Contractor Fund (MCCF). His love for children and vocational learning also yields time for him as an advisor and mentor for The African American West Project. This program promotes the education and exposure of inner-city children towards African American history in the old west, post slavery and during reconstruction. It also exposes children to agricultural, veterinarian and equestrian based career paths. With all his life’s passions, Mr. Hollowell commonly refers to himself as an example to our youth, what constitutes as being an Urban Renaissance Man.
